1.Diagnosis and Treatment for Malocclusion
The goals of orthodontic treatment for malocclusion are facial esthetics, occlusal function, health of masticatory system and long-term stability. The successful treatment results should be based on proper diagnosis before treatment. The age-specific cephalometric analysis is an important tool in orthodontics for case diagnosis, analyzing treatment results and growth changes. The cephalometric norm of Chinese subjects with normal occlusion was established. Further study to develop cephalometric diagnostic indicator is undergoing to improve the decision of treatment strategies for different types of malocclusion.
2.Biochemical Responses of Periodontal Ligament Cells to Mechanical Stress
The biological aspects of clinical orthodontics based on the responses of periodontal tissue to orthodontic force. Behind the clinical phenomenon of tooth movement induced by force application, the periodontal fibroblasts and osteoblasts play important roles in the transduction of mechanical stimuli into biological signal and inducing cellular responses and tissue reaction subsequently. Relevant basic studies will make contributions to our understanding of mechanism regulating the orthodontic tooth movement. With the application of Flexercell strain unit, we can study the stress-induced responses of periodontal ligament fibroblasts in the cellular and molecular level.
