Research Outline     

Research in our laboratory recently focuses on resistance gene structures in bacteria, especially in Staphylococcus. Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen responsible for both healthcare and community-acquired infections. Resistance to antimicrobial agents is an increasing problem. Recently we analysed the resistant determinants and genetic structure of fusidic acid resistance in staphylococci. Accumulating evidence suggested that the resistance genes are partly due to “resistance islands”, which may be widely present in Staphylococcus species, including coagulase-negative species. Since little is known about the molecular mechanisms of resistance to fusidic acid, our ongoing experiments aim to gain further insight into the genetic structure in isolates obtaining from both clinical and commensal sites.
